Rot

Rot. You gag and spit it back out, and see what you thought was food as it rots in front of your eyes. Mold fills your plate, and you look up in horror to see the entire room decaying.

The skin tightens around the figure sitting across from you, as their flesh leaks off of their bones. The table is swarming with bugs and the walls start to fill with holes.

A raspy voice echoes from their half decomposed skull, saying things that sink deep into your body and make you sick. You throw up. The smell is overwhelming. The bugs are swarming the body now, ripping off any chunks that they can. The voice doesn’t stop, whispering words of decay and corruption. It feels like it’s right against your ear.

You need to leave. Right now.

The doorknob rusts under your hand, and the hallway leaks a fluid that smells like death. You run and run and run and the voice doesn’t stop. You hear everyone you’ve lost, all the lives that you stole in your quest for revenge and their voices join the chorus as their bodies pile up around you.

Your heart leaps as you finally see another door, but when you open it you’re back in the dining room. Hunched in the chair is the person you lost. The one all of this was for. Sockets without eyes focus on you as their head twists with a snap of bones. They start speaking and you fall to your knees.

You’ve wanted to hear this voice for years. It’s all you ever thought about. The whispering fills your mind as you collapse onto the floor, dragging yourself towards them. You feel your body start to hollow, as your tendons wither away and your skin starts to peel. Your bones scrape against the floor and you see a skeletal hand, your hand, reach out to touch them. One last time. You’re a hair’s width away, and right as you’re about to make contact, your bones wither into dust. Your vision fades and the last thing you see is their face as it rots right alongside you.
